Living in Australia

Introduction

Australia is a country with a rich mix of culture and nature. In Australia you can find the stunning architecture of the Sydney Opera House, the glow of Uluru (Ayers Rock) at dusk and the beautiful reef (home to Nemo!). Australia's natural beauty is one of its biggest attractions. You can find golden beaches, tropical rainforests and endless deserts. The wildlife is world famous, with animal species such as kangaroos and koalas that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Australian cities are a fabulous combination of art and food with a love of sport and the outdoors. Together, this gives Australia and its places a fascinating and unique character.

The People

In 2005, Australia's population was 20,265,000. Most people live along the eastern seaboard, with a smaller number on the southwestern coast. Living in one of the world's most culturally diverse countries – 23% are born overseas – Australians incorporate a wide variety of influences into the way they live and play.

The Places

Australia's states and territories each have unique characteristics. Explore one at a time or, when your studies have finished, visit them all at the same time! This would mean over 14,000km of highway, not including side trips to beaches, forests, mountains, country towns... If you'd rather not go far from where you are studying, you will still find there is plenty to keep you entertained.

Sydney

One of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, Sydney is an exciting, but safe, city with an international range of services and a clean natural environment. A high standard of education and good student services have given Sydney a reputation as the perfect place to study.

With a mild to warm climate, Sydney’s numerous clean and safe parks and beaches are perfect for enjoying outdoor activities and a healthy lifestyle. In 2000, Sydney hosted "the best Olympics ever" (former president of the IOC Juan Antonio Samaranch) which reflects the positivity, energy and harmony that exists within the city.

Sydney has a rich mixture of ethnic and cultural groups and an international atmosphere. With hundreds of restaurants, cafes and cultural attractions, Sydney has something for everyone and many experiences to discover.

Transport is another area where Sydney excels. Sydney possesses a fleet of modern and clean fleet of trains, buses and taxis that are safe, reliable and inexpensive.

Sydney’s natural environment consists of a unique range of native plants and animals, many of which can be experienced in various easily-accessible zoos and pristine national parks which surround Sydney.

It is because of all these features that Sydney has become one of the world’s most popular tourist and study destinations.

The Potential

Australia offers a unique experience for students. Apart from its world-class education system, the opportunities to get involved in daily life are endless: whether you are into the arts or sport, partying or book clubs, the great outdoors or cosy cafés, you will find many ways to join in and have fun. So if you want to get an education and have a life, Australia really is the place to be.
